Thread: Ball Joints?

    Ball Joints?

    Blazer needs ball joints done.

    A) Does anyone have an OTC 7249 or similar laying around i could borrow for a bit?

    B) How much should a sane ma and pa shop charge to do the ball joints (all four)? I got one quote from a tire shop that does everything, they wanted almost $550 for all four..but i'm told that's freaking nuts.

ball joints arent bad especially if they're not riveted in.

i'd have to say $550 is redic for all 4 ball joints but i do all my own stuff so i dont really know what shops r charging these days

Ball joints are somewhat time intensive according to most shops so that quote for $550 is about right though a little on the high side.

Honestly though you can change all your ball joints yourself in one day, hell in an afternoon and thats if you are dicking around. Its not hard to do and you just need simple hand tools and a pickle fork (you dont need that ball joint tool at all). If you still have that link i IM'ed ya about a while back to DC-Flux's article about ball joint replacement then you have all the instructions you will ever need. I followed his instructions when i did mine (save for the standing on the breaker bar, i put my spare on and put the socket through the hole in the middle of the rim to get the nut off while holding the hub still) and it was no big deal.

Are they pressed on or bolted on?

Usually they are riveted in but dont freak out about that. They can easily be removed with an angle grinder (to take the head of the rivet off) and either a punch or a drill to take out the rest. After that it pops right out and you use the old rivet holes to bolt in the new one.

Picked up one side uppers and lowers from Autozombie for $50..Duralasts with lifetime warranties. I'm already doing a wheel bearing (before it takes out my other CV axle when she goes) so might as well kill two birds with one stone. Any tricks for getting the steering knuckle loose of the ball joints?

Yep, get a pickle fork and a hammer. Insert the fork between the knuckle and the control arm around the ball joint and beat with a hammer. Works like a champ every time.
